Natural Remedies for Neck Pain

Cervical Spondylosis is in other terms called as neck arthritis, cervical osteoarthritis, an age-related condition by which the joints and discs are affected in the neck.

Cervical spondylosis causes due to the wear and tear of the cartilage and bones in the cervical spine. Though it is mostly due to the age factor, it can also be of other factors. There are totally seven vertebrae in the neck region out of which 4-7 is usually affected. In older people, it occurs due to age degeneration whereas in youngsters cervical spondylosis occurs by prolonged working in the computers.
Dehydrated spinal discs: The gel-like material in between the spinal discs is responsible for shock absorption, and all activities. When the vertebrae rub together the gel material starts to dry that causes severe and sharp pain.
Bone Spur: The extra bone growth pressures the spinal cord, nerves, and results in pain

Herniated disc: When the spinal disc moves from its position due to abnormal activities, the material comes out and presses the nerves, spinal cord results to arm numbness and sciatica.

Injury: Sudden fall or accident in the neck region sometimes damages the disc or accelerate the aging process.

  • Headaches at the back of the head
  • Numbness, tingling sensation is experienced at the shoulders and arms and may also occur in leg
  • Pain around the shoulder blade might be experienced that increases during sneezing, coughing, sitting, tilting the neck backward.

Elakizhi: It is also known as Pachakizhi. In this process, fresh leaves are collected, cut into small pieces then fried in the medicated oil along with lemon, coconut scrape. It is tied into cloth to make it as a bolus. Using the bolus painful areas are massaged where the herbal oil extract penetrates into the skin and relieves the pain and spasm.
Kati vasti: A bridge like structure is created in the neck area and warm oil is poured in that area and makes the patient hold for a period of time.
Njavarakizhi: Milk, Certain oils, medicated rice is mixed and applied on the affected neck potion to relieve the pain which is otherwise called as Shashtikashali Pinda swedam.

Marma treatments are effective where the marma points are handled gently by the ayurvedic practitioners.
Patients should be careful about the intake of food where sour and salty foods are to be avoided; cold weather exposure is to be strictly avoided. Mild exercises should be done like walking.
